HOW TO COPE IN A FAST PACED WORLD

The 'Long-Term' Myth in a 'Short Term' World & Planing for the Long-Term

WHATEVER THAT IS

Picture this:

I'm just minding my own business, sipping on my morning coffee, when suddenly, the wise words of Seth Godin, the marketing guru extraordinaire, come blasting through my speakers.

Seth Godin, the marketing guru extraordinaire.

This guy's been around since the dawn of the internet (okay, maybe not that long, but you get the point), and he's been my inspiration since I joined the wild and wacky dot.com boom of the late nineties.

So, when he speaks, I listen up, because who doesn't want to learn from a master?

Now, here's the kicker: Blogs shouldn't preach.

They can inform, sure, but they shouldn't try to be handing out all the answers like some kind of all-knowing oracle. Instead, their purpose is to get the reader's gears turning, to make them ponder life's big questions so they can come up with their own answers.

So, don't expect me to spoon-feed you, my dears.

I'm just here to throw some ideas your way and let you chew on them mentally..

First up, let's tackle the big one: how long is the long term? (cue dramatic music)

Is it a year? A decade? A lifetime?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

In fact, I'd argue that the long term is really just a bunch of short terms strung together like a necklace of procrastination.

So, maybe we should be asking, "How long is the short term, and how many of these bite-sized chunks do we need to create a so-called long term?"

But let's be real, that's just mental gymnastics, and we're not here for a brain workout

(or are we?).

How to survive in a fast paced world

In our fast-paced, instant-gratification-obsessed society,

we're all about the quick fix.

Whether it's that after-work gin and tonic (or three), a little retail therapy, or stuffing our faces with a Big Mac and extra fries, we'll do just about anything for a temporary high.

And you know what? It usually works!

But beware, my friends, because these short-term solutions can be as

addictive as binge-watching Netflix shows. Before you know it, you're in too deep, and there's no turning back.

Not even going to touch on alcohol and substance abuse.

Rather, let's talk about some of life's biggest decisions: where to live, what career to pursue, and who to marry. These are the biggies, the choices that can make or break us.

You might think signing a one-year lease on your first apartment is a long-term

commitment, but guess what? It's not!

It's just a tiny step in the grand scheme of things.

And don't even get me started on buying a place – the minute you move in, you're already planning your upgrade to a bigger and better abode.

Careers? Ha!

Gone are the days when people stuck with the same job for a lifetime. Now, it's all about job-hopping and trying on different hats (figuratively speaking, of course – although, if you want to literally wear different hats, or headscarves, go for it).

Choosing the right career path in a saturated society

It's not uncommon to see people switching careers more often than they switch their toothbrushes. Apparently after three months, the toothbrush has collected enough bacteria to start a small germ warfare facility.

And then there's marriage. We make these grandiose vows, promising to love and cherish each other until death do us part, but let's face it – things change, people change, and sometimes, love fizzles out..

Divorce used to be this big, scandalous thing, but now it's just another bump in the road.

Sure, it's still a messy and unpleasant experience, but it's a short-term pain for long-term

gain, right?

The Jenga of Decisions

The harsh reality is that we're living in a world that's changing at breakneck speed, and what we once considered "long-term" decisions are really just a series of short-term choices.

It's like we're all playing a giant game of Jenga, stacking up our decisions and hoping the tower doesn't come crashing down.

And don't even get me started on the media's role in all of this.

They're constantly bombarding us with images of the perfect life, the latest gadgets, and the trendiest vacation spots, making us feel like we're missing out if we're not keeping up with the

Joneses (or the Kardashians, for that matter).

It's enough to make your head spin and give you a nasty dose of FOMA.

So, how do we stay sane in a world that's moving at warp speed?

Honestly, I wish I had the answer. I'm just as addicted to change as the next person, constantly trying to keep up with the latest trends and technologies.

Can we turn the clock and go back in time?

But maybe, just maybe, the key is to embrace the old as much as the new.

To appreciate the things that have stood the test of time, the objects and relationships that have a story to tell.

In a world that's obsessed with the shiny and new, perhaps it's time to step back and appreciate the beauty of the old. To realise that there's value in the things that have been around the block a few times, that have weathered the storms of life and come out the other side with a few scars, but a whole lot of character.

So, I leave you with this: embrace the chaos, but don't forget to hold onto the things that truly matter.

And if all else fails, just remember – old is the new black.

(Or was it orange? I’m too old keep up with these fashion trends.)
