THE DEATH OF DEMOCRACY

Is Democracy Dying? The West's Struggle Against Communism and Electoral Intrigue

After World War 2, we were told that the existential threat to western style democracy was the spread of communism. In particular, the USA appeared to be terrified of it and

Fighter jet planes from World War II

created the CIA not only as an intelligence gathering institution but to lead the fight against communism

abroad while the FBI took on a witch-hunt against it domestically.

The jury seems to be still out on whether the tactics used at the time were appropriate to the

real or imaginary danger that communism posed.

Let’s agree that it certainly posed some kind of threat as Russia wanted to established itself as the new world power and hang on to most of

Korean Lady and Baby in front of a Tank in the Korean War

Europe and the Chinese were keen to push out from their borders and fought a bloody Korean war

against a United Nations force led by the Americans, that ended in a virtual stalemate in 1953.

I remember growing up in the latter half of the last century being told that

we were under threat from the Soviet Union and they might employ chemical weapons as well as nuclear ones to get their way.

Although we had a smaller version of NATO, there was the fear back then, as there is now, that

if it came down to the wire, the US might not jump in to defend what remained of Western Europe and the reds would overrun us.

How history has a habit of repeating itself.

One of my school holiday jobs was working on a farm in the summer, helping with the harvest and I became pretty good at driving a tractor, managed to get a respectable tan even with my pale Irish skin and enjoying the rough humour of the real farm workers, that could have come straight from a soap opera.

A beer after eight hours of hard work tasted amazing and this healthy outdoor life had its appeal. I often thought as I sat on my tractor, if the reds do take over the country, I’m quite happy being a farm worker, one of the proletariat and mucking in.

Strange thoughts for someone who was raised in a traditionally conservative family

of upper middle class snobs. The sentiments had no political leaning to them, but I guessed

the bottom line was ‘better red than dead’,

whereas for others it’s clearly the opposite,

‘better dead than red’.

Iconic Image taken during the Vietnam War

So many Americans died fighting the spread of communism in the past.

The Vietnam war alone cost the lives of 58,000 US servicemen ( and women ) killed, and God knows how many critically injured or suffering mental disorders for the rest of their

time on earth.

Fast forward to the present day and you have the Ukrainians bravely defending their country against what they see as a brutal communist regime that seeks to return it to a vassal

state.

But hang in a minute...isn’t Russia meant to be a

democracy?

Of course it is and voting started yesterday morning. But more importantly, is it really a democratic election when you murder, lock up or exile your political opponents?

Ruthless leader Joseph Stalin

And control the media in an iron grip that would have impressed even the ruthless Stalin.

The outcome is another six years in the Presidency for Vlad.

Only those bereft of their common sense or honesty could ever claim this is democracy at work.

It’s a travesty of democracy, nothing more than

a self perpetuating regime that is determined to hang onto power.

So,

at this moment you are probably thinking how superior we are in ‘the West’,

where this sort of kind of shenanigans does not go on.

Or does it?

There are certainly instances of the US fixing elections in other people’s countries, quite openly and shamelessly.

The first president of South Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem

Take the election of Ngo Dinh Diem, the first president of South Vietnam in 1955.

He won so convincingly that the vote turnout was a hundred and twenty percent in some places like Saigon.

And that’s just one glaring example of the hand of the CIA at work across the globe.

They are very talented at making sure the right candidate wins, one way or another.

But let’s look closer at the forthcoming election in the world’s

leading democracy and number one world power.

The choice is

between two ancient gentlemen who compete

with each other to be the most unsuitable candidates

from the only two parties that exist.

Why are there only two parties you ask?

Sorry, there’s no easy answer to that and if I tried, I would soon bury myself in the murky world of conspiracy theories.

Why don’t you ask ChatGPT to enlighten you?

I doubt it’s far superior brainpower and access to the online universe has any better explanation than ‘well, that’s how it is folks’.

United States Elections: President Donald Trump or President Joe Biden

But going back to the title of this blog, is democracy dead or dying.

It does not seem to be in a good place right now and whether we get President Trump or President Biden re-elected to safeguard the world as we know it, I have that worrying feeling

that neither of them is fit for purpose.

And apparently, most Americans would agree with me.

So while Eternal Blue is on some levels reflecting the struggle between the heroes or the west and the evil regimes of the east, can we really be that sure those labels work as they used to?

Or

Will the wonders of AGI Artificial General Intelligence manage

to brainwash us so completely by the time we are old enough

to vote?

Perhaps none of this matters any more? Only asking...I
